Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None I just got back from a local gig (NJ) and I think I did pretty well sitting in with a bunch of southern boys (Texicans, so they said). Anyhow the crowd was and the band was . So it's all good. right? Here's the rub....They handed me a Civil War Confederate flag, what they called the 'Stars and Bars'. Maybe appropriate for the show, but should I hang it up? In my basement, next to my track? I know the state flag of Georgia displays the 'Stars & Bars' I feel kind of caught between a rock and a hard place, 'cause it was given by guys who I have some respect and they respect me. But I also have some friends who might look at it a little diferently. I would appreciate a little input, but I think I have already made up my mind. What you display in your house is your business. The front lawn area may be a little different story unless you don't like your neighbors.

Yes, it's history, which has a place, and not necessarily on display, unless it's in a museum. Sure behind closed doors is your business. But remember Waco and the Branch Dividian? I had ancestors that fought on both sides in the Civil War. I have a confederate flag hanging on the wall behind my track. If someone doesn't like it that's their problem, not mine. It is not the official flag of the south, but the battle flag and represents men who fought for what they believed. Most soldiers did not own slaves. Everyone in my family were staunch abolitionists. Two had their legs blown off for what they believed. If the North had lost and had a battle flag, I would be angry if someone said that I can't display a flag representing my dead relatives. I would not display the Stars and Bars at my house being from an abolitionist family and an abolitionist. I believe in abolishing the new slavery which is the ignorance which comes from the lack of education in basic work skills. School systems pass every kid and say, "You are OK Joey, you tried." These are the procurers of slaves and the system that likes the new illiterate class are the masters. Enough of my tirade - I better go pray. I have African-American neighbors and friends. They know what I'm all about, and still they come over and drink my beer. It is hanging right next to 'Old Glory'. Love it or leave it. Posts: 227 (05/02/08 04:50 PM) Home Racing Forum Veteran Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I don't know if you've ever been to a NASCAR race, but if you have, you probably know that you'll see plenty of Confederate flags flying in the infield and camping areas. The flag that most view as the Rebel flag was actually a Confederate Navy flag. The actual battle flags were quite different, some with white borders, or a field of white with the "Stars & Bars" in the upper left hand corner. The original Southern flag was the "Bonnie Blue Flag" just a white star on a blue background. You could hang a photo of the "General Lee" from Dukes of Hazzard next to it, to give it a little perspective. The unfortunate issue with the Confederate flag is that it has been adopted by Neo-Nazis and various hate-groups, and it has put a negative connotation on what should be a historic artifact.

You could not run a plantation and pay workers what they were worth. Slavery was a means of cheap labor. As with everything, some people went too far and treated their laborers as dirt and got what they deserved. I was not born in this country so I ain't either. They're called "Grannies Grits". And although they claim to be 'Texicans', I think the closest they ever got to Texas was watching a Cowboys game in South Philly . I had seen them at a place on the Jersey shore a couple years back and helped their guitarist ('Jethro') sort out a problem with his amp. Last night I stopped at a bar the next town over and just happened to have my steel guitar in the trunk, and one thing led to another.
