My question is this: what is a good size for a routed oval? Within reason of course. I like short track racing, so a flat 1/4 miler similar to Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston Salem NC springs to mind. Would like to run Pro Slots on it, mostly, probably squeeze the lanes in the corners, leavinbg enough room to pass if everybody is in control ( yeah right!!!). We're buying a new house and it has a slot room and I am weighing my options. Plastic vs routed; one track or two, etc. The room is sorta triangular shaped, but could get two layouts in there. Or one really large layout. Have thought about trying to incorporate the oval into a larger layout idea and have some sort of gates to allow the oval to be part of road course. I'm taking my time, 'cause we got a ways to go before the slot room can actually come online. Randy

Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	To build the track to scale it would have to be about 45 feet around including the shoulders. If you made the radius 3 feet you would need a 6X19 foot table and have straights 13 feet long. You could make the track more of a paperclip by decreasing the radius to 2.5 feet with 14.5 foot straights and a 5X20 foot table. This will actually look like a much bigger track than you would expect, even 2.5 foot radius turns are wide by 1/32nd standards. If it was me I would only squeeze one turn.

Posts: 111 (03/13/08 12:44 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	good choice Randy, mine is 7x16 and we love it, i don't think i would squeeze the turns at all, my spacing is 3.75 and we are pretty good racers and there is still alot of nerfing in the heat of the battle. like rich said 5 x 20 would make a real nice track and would be alot of fun.

The deal with squeezing is to recreate the BGS racing. If you;re not familiar, Bowman Gray is a 1/4 mile oval around the Football field that WSSU uses. Not at the same time, although that would definitely be interesting. It's flat (3 or 4 degrees), and basically a one-groove track. BUT, the idea of squeezing only one end may be a good one. I keep forgetting to get out my room measurements to see what I really have room for. Thanks again Randy

Posts: 44 (03/13/08 06:39 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I would favor as broad of corners as possible, maybe make the track 8x20, lots of drifting and powersliding thru those big broad sweepers, flat or just a minimum amount of banking. That would be my suggestion. Of course the ultimate oval would be an ellipse....imagine the Ford logo. No straights at all, someday I will build an oval like this. I would use parallel lane spacing, no squeezes, and I speak from experience, I built a small test oval with one end with squeezes, wouldn't do it again, it results in a crash-fest, especially with newbies/young kids. The long walls are 13' 11" and 20' 6" in an L-shape. Check the image below. The room is basically traingular. I would like to get a longer straight than I have now, which is approx 10' - 11'. I'm working on it. Problem is getting a road course and oval in there together. Can possibly fit a 5 x 10 oval. 3 lanes with an inside radius of 36". I got plenty of time to work on it, though. I have small wood oval that is a blast to race on. A scale 1/4 mile oval isn't a very big track. From your room dimensions, it looks like you could fit "D" shaped oval with a big, very fast sweeper in the upper right corner of your drawing. The sweeper would be a blast to drive on and could almost serve as an additional straight depending on the radius and banking that you worked out. Laguna Seca used to have a fast sweeper like that just after the front straight. It has since been eliminated. I watched Freddy Spencer lay down his Kawasaki at about 150 mph on that turn in about 1982. But I digress. Your road course could fit into the infield of a track like that. Indy and Daytona are 1:1 examples I can think of. It wouldn't be hard to build some sort of movable shunt into your slots to divert the cars from the oval into the infield for road racing. The oval could be at an upper elevation with the infield lower. This would make a D shaped bowl. The main straight dipping down in the middle to allow a diverting turn into the lower infield section. Underpasses could get the road course into the areas where the oval wouldn't fit like that little 6 ft area in the lower right corner. Having a whole room is an exciting option for a slot racer.
