Lane spacing questions |
Lead | |
|
I've decided to build an oval which I can run both 1/32 and 1/24 instead of just the smaller scale. Should the lane spacing be 4" or something else? Also, I plan it to be a 6' x 16'. Will this be a decent size for a 4 lane oval? Not planning on running anything suoer fast, mainly 16D and 36D powered cars.

Yup. Would be just fine. I'd leave just a 4" gutter above he outside lane and 4" below the bottom. IF you can leave more at the bottom that way when someone comes off they can fall clear of everyone.
I'd think about doing something different than just an oval. Maybe a 'D' or tri-oval or something like Gateway International Raceway where there are two different radius and two different banks. ![]() Just my $1.13 Vince |

Thanks! I am wanting to replica dirt (asphalt is for getting there!!) so a plain old oval it is! We are going to be running scratch built wing sprints, modifieds, and stockers.

Four inch lane spacing should definitely get you into intimate relations with the fenders of other cars. If you weren't dirt tracking, I might suggest 4-1/2 inches. Too bad there's not a way to actually throw rooster tails of dirt in the air, while sliding around the corners. Actually, I suppose there is, but it's real messy. Silly-cone tires wouldn't like it.

I think 4" lane spacing would be the way to go but I would recommend more than that for the outside gutter. I have raced on Harry's oval a few
times and have found that his 6" gutters work very well. It just gives you a little bit more room if the tail end swings out. Any shorter in the gutter
and you can pretty much just let the rear of the car ride on the outside wall all the way around the corner. That's not really driving the car around the
track... that's keeping the trigger burries and letting the wall drive for you |

<-------- this is my track 7x16 and lbowles2 is correct i have a 4 in. gutter at each end and you do smack it alot and it will screw you more than help you,
my next track will be darlington with 3in inside and 6in outside. my spacing is 3.75 in. we only run 32nd cars, and we do rub alot of paint, i would recommend
4in. we really like the oval, the racing is very close. sprint would be very cool.

Kozee,,, go with the 6"gutter. I have a two lane oval that I use mostly for sprint cars (4'X12') I ended up having to add extensions on each end
because you can actually drive the cars just like a sprinter on dirt. Rear end way out there. I like the previous idea about having two different radius at
each end. That is how mine is set up. One end you really can step on it, the other its slam on the brakes hard and then step on it. Also it really helps to
have the exit of your turns from about half way though gradually drift out at not steep of a turn. Other wise you will hit the main straights sideways and if
your side by side usally one car will snap back in front of the other and well you know what happens if a open wheel car hits the wheel of another car. Slots
are no different and they fly just like the real thing. Besides it looks real if the cars hit the straights not so sideways. I have my lanes set a 4".
Your still going to hit each other. I would'nt go any less.

Thanks all for the input. Rubbin' is Racin'!!! I was already planning on a 6" gutters, both inside and out. Still going to go with a standard oval
since the main concentration of body styles will be dirt cars, primarily scratch built with one of two 1/32 classes being Artin chassis based for an entry
level class.
