"Cool Tools" Sticky | ||
|
I was thinking it might be useful to have a cool tools sticky/pin. The definition of a "cool tool" would be any tool, store bought or home-made, that ends up making some aspect of what we do slotting-wise so much easier.
For example, I have this metal punch I bought from Harbor Freight - it's just a hand held metal punch with several punches and dies. I use this thing ALL the time for punching nice clean, accurately placed holes in a variety of sheet product and it even makes nice spacers for shiming wheels and axles...19 bucks. Another example - Lib made a simple (but brilliant) chassis jig from a 2 x 2 to help with alignment when stretching an Artin chassis after you have cut it in half. I'm sure everyone here has either picked up some off-beat tool that ends up being priceless in the "fab shop" or has made some clever tool for removing crown gears or wheels or whatever. Maybe someone out there has built a clever little jig to help sand stock Artin tires perfectly the first time! My Holy Grail! What say ye Philippe?? Squatch ![]() |

Here's a fixture to hold a stock Artin chassis while extending. It was made using a table saw.
![]() ![]() I use two part epoxy to fill the gap. Haven't had one break yet! |

Lib - do you lube up the fixture with some grease/oil first so the glue won't stick?

Actually I use a piece of cellophane (sp?) between the chassis and the fixture. The glue doesn't normally stick to it but if it does, it can't be seen anyway.
The wrapper from a pack of smokes is what I usually use. |

Here's a pinion gear puller available from Tower Hobbies. Chuck told me about this one!
