To me, the miniscule Fly scale errors of the past were completely forgiveable for the price, and the consistency of their performance was more than adequate after the usual minor fixups (I never did have to get new wheels for one, but when I did it just for fun once, the car improved tremendously). So, if this new offering is going to be worth the money, and the price is higher, then the quality level is going to have to be just as much improved as the price has increased. You would think this is obvious, but others have been silly about this kind of thing in the recent past, so we'll see. I have very high hopes for Fly's return to the market, but I've been bitterly disappointed recently by cars I waited a long time for, that came out at stupid prices. Quality can only improve so far. When the price is so high that improved quality can't catch up to make it worth the price, the manufacturer is throwing away a huge chunk of their market. Like I say, it should be obvious, but others have stepped way over the line for me. There ain't no learnin' in the second kick of a mule...

I've owned two of the previous kits and while I thought they were nice looking models, the performance was underwhelming. I like them but at $80 retail or so a pop, they are pretty far down on my list. I have a couple of Racer 250LM race kits that I love to run even though they barely resemble the Fly car! Posts: 698 (05/21/10 10:43 AM) Home Racing Guru! Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	OK I got this one. I now run the yellow Fly 250 LM as my NON-MAG car and oh what a hassle it was to get to run well! First the front floating wheels have to be stabilized, had to keep the movement down to keep from rolling all the time on its back in a corner! Also the chassis is so flimsy that mine is super-glued to death to keep from falling apart! Also have not been able to find a replacement chassis. Wheels fell apart at the axle points had to put on 917 fly wheels, wanted gold 512 but could not fint those either! But after all that said it is one of the fastest Flys in the club and always has a chance to win as long as I dont mess it up! This is not a car for the light of heart to get to run well it will brake your heart more offten then not! I was determined to get it to run with the 512, and the Lola ! I might open it up and show this FRANKENSTEIN with pics latter!

I personally think these are much better than the early Fly classics, 908, 917, 512, etc. They look great, I think they are very close to scale, and they run very good with minimal tuning on my Ninco track. I will say, the Fly car and the Monogram, as straight stock, don't compare, speed wise. But with a little common sense tuning, each car will do just fine for most use. It comes down to the driver, really. I found the Monogram cars benefited from a smoother motor, just as the Shelby Mustangs did, and the Fly motors required the usual short break in period before they smoothed out. There ain't no learnin' in the second kick of a mule...

Not terribly wrong just off a little. Maybe it is because I am comparing it to the beautiful Racer brand version of this car. However I know someone will point out that the Racer brand version is not to scale I totally agree. But that does not take away from the fact that they got the curves correct on this car and fly just seems to have missed it by a little. Consequently I have stayed away from this model. I am eager to read your review of this car, I might just have pick one up anyway. Live Long & Prosper, David.

What do the smart folks think of it scale wise? The running gear? I think I know what I am in for. But perfectly scale? No, likely not. Just like all the other cars we see. No seriously, as much as I like the Racer cars, aside from their insane price, they go too far to fit the very wide tires and wheels from the era, hence the curvy beautifully finished bodies. I was taken aback the first time I saw a Racer, and I went back to photos of the real cars, and found that the gorgeous Racers in fact, err on the other side in some cases. Compare the rear tire width of this real car with Racer's sexy rear end. The real car is higher, the tires are more narrow, and the curves of the fenders are much more like the Fly and Monogram versions. There ain't no learnin' in the second kick of a mule...

Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The most famous feature of the car was in fact, it looked pudgy compared to the sleeker 375 open car, which was actually very similar. The roof made the car look different. But the Racer is artificially lowered, widened, and the rear fender curve is all wrong. On the other hand, I agree its very sexy looking, and I like the shape much more than the real car. Fly didn't repeat the errors of others, maybe, but I'd be surprised if they didn't make some of their own. There ain't no learnin' in the second kick of a mule...

When viewed from that perspective (the rear) together I can clearly see where Racer took some liberties with the sculptor's knife. Maybe Fly did get it right and Racer got it slightly wrong, I stand corrected. The Racer version is much sexier no doubt and I'd still love to own one. However I am seriously reconsidering the Fly version of this car. I better move quickly Fly will not be able to sell these after mid June 2010. Hey Bruce you got another one for me? I'll give you a call. Racer has these Racing kits that are stripped down version of their regular RTR models they are missing some of the photos etched parts and do not come with any tampo printing. These Racing kits can be had for around $100.00 sometimes less with a little bit of shopping. This price is just a little bit more than the price of a Fly Ferrari 250 GT-LM. That is assuming one pays retail for this model, about $78.00. What I'm getting at is that one could reasonably acquire both models if you just had to have both. Something for me to consider with my limited slot car funds. Again I'll need to make a decision soon mid June is approaching very quickly. Live Long & Prosper, David. Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Rob in Mid June, our friends at Carrera have an exclusive contract with Ferrari to sell Ferrari slot car models world wide. No other mfg's are allowed to sell them after the contract begins. the contract is for three (3) count em years! Retailers and distributors are allowed to sell off there remaining stock, however mfg's have to desist all sales at contract commencement. Good for Carrera and Ferrari, bad for the hobby if you were counting on Fly, Slot.it, Mono-Rev, Scalextric, SCX, Sloter, Racer and others for your Ferrari slot car models. Oh well we've been through this sort of thing before, back when Mattel had the exclusive contract right to mfg and sell Ferrari models. Live Long & Prosper, David. I purchased one some time ago and watching it now on my track I am a bit disappointed - when viewed slightly from above the exaggerated width is very obvious and in my eyes it looks like a big flat toad, not very convincing. The Fly version has a much more scale-like appearance and it runs very well too. It does not run like an NSR OOB, but it's challenging & fun, and well matched to the Fly & Scalex GT40's. The regular car is narrower, I don't have one here so I can't say how much. What are the dimensions of the Flyslot car?

Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Remove this ad The Racer model with the fat tail and wide tires is a "character study", or a caricature, of the Piper version which really did have wider fenders to cover wider tires. It ran about 1966. The Racer model is, however, slammed, and that moves it from the realm of character to caricature, in my opinion. When we measured the door to door width of the body (which should be unaffected by the flares over the tires) we found it was scaled to 1/27. The Fly version does not have the widened rear end, and the door-to-door width places it around 1/30 (not sure if it's 1/31; I'd have to look up the notes). The Fly model is much more acceptable to me. But Fly didn't quite "orchestrate" the symphony of curves to get the Ferrari-like beauty, while Racer did a better job at making a car that looks beautiful in its own right (even though hugely out of scale). I have one of the Fly 250LM's that needed only a few mods to be a very good handling car.
