In the house I lived in in the past I used a combination of folding 8 ft. tables, 2 x 4 x 12's on top of the tablets the I used large sheets of Melamine shelving material for the top and covered the Melamine with some of the grass type carpet sold at Lowes. This provided me with an 11 x 14 ft. table surface on which I had a 50 plus ft track layout. Main problem when using a larege rectangler or square surface is being able to reach cars easily for marschels. I have seen some large track layouts on tables where it appears the table is made / cut along the curves and contours of the track layout in order to provide room for a marshel to moven ina and around the layout. Can any of you gice me some advice as to how I might accomplish this?

Posts: 97 (10/05/09 06:02 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	First look at your space and decide how much of it is going to be the layout and tape the outline, I usually lay out my track on the floor and use it for a week or two, making changes as needed. You will notice where marshaling will be needed and whether or not you can reach the cars, you may have to adjust the track and make cut outs or adjust the table position to allow you to reach the cars. There are a couple of ways to go with the tables but you need a design first. When I planned the Dragon I left the center of one of the tables open so my kids could get in and Marshall the cars, as they got bigger I added a foam insert and created grandstands and a garage. I also used the scenery to help keep the cars from flying off the table, the banked straight was created to keep the cars from flying off turn #1. The mountain and castle are also used to keep the cars off the floor, all those roads along the edges and the infield were made for my kids to play with their Hot Wheels and GI Joe's (the small ones). Posts: 1 (10/30/09 10:16 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	If you are looking for flexibility in building your benchwork, consider using the L-girder method developed by model railroaders. You have a great deal of flexibility in where you place the supporting joists under the surface, how they are angled, and the length. Minimum carpentry skills are required and the benchwork is very strong and light. Here is a photo of part of my benchwork. Some of this was a model railroad in a previous life.

You cut the plywood, or whatever you use for the sub-roadbed, along the sides of the track with a jig saw and add risers from below to support the plywood at the desired height.
