Parma controller with switch? |
Lead | |
|
Hi guys, I read a post that mentioned Parma controllers with multi resistors and a switch. Can I buy it that way or must I do it myself? Where might I find
instructions? Would it be better
to buy electronic controllers? I run Artin with and without magnets and SCX. Some of my Artin cars have motors that I removed from Dollar Store toys. Thanks dpitts |

dpitts, you can make the Parma eco 15 ohm controller switchable to 15 / 12 / 9 ohms. Or a 90 ohm switchable to 90/60/45.
my personal preference is 15 ohms for artins and 90 for scx. you can´t cover this range with one resistor type controller. if you only want one controller, i say go for a slot.it SCP1, but i don´t have any experience with this or any other electronic controller. You can also built an electronic controller by yourself. For the switchable controller, you will only need one 60 ohm and one 22 ohm resistor and a 3 position switch (on/off/on). here is the theory for this, sorry it is german, but i don´t have an english site available. http://home.arcor.de/slotracingtechnik/homepage/reglerparallel.htm Peter here is another topic ´bout controllers, maybe check this one, too: http://homeracingworld.yuku.com/topic/7302 |

Hey dpitts,
Go to this link and check out the controllers that Joe has at: http://www.geocities.com/njhobby/controllers/controllers.html I have gotten a couple different ones off of him and they are very nice and well built!! A bit pricey but, after all the stuff you have to buy to build your own and the time put into it, it may be well worth buying one off him. JMHO!! Here is a picture of a 15 ohm(blue) and the (red) is multi-ohm.
I also have the 70/80/90 from Joe's for my HO cars also!! Hope this helps!! Good Luck!!

Peter,
Is it possible to do 25-35-45 or something close. My artin cars were powerpassers and have a different motor. They perform a lot more smooth than the artin that came with the dollar store set. They run best at 10-12 volts instead of 6-8 volts. I sure wish I could read German, That article looks very helpful!! Would I need additional Parma resistors or the type from Radio Shack? Thanks Peter!!!! dpitts |

you would not need additional parma resistor, standard 5W resistor do the job very fine. you would need a 60 ohm parallel resistor for the 25 ohm stage and a
150 ohm for the 35 ohm stage.
i´ll post pics of my controller when i´m back in Austria, i´m now sitting in romania till friday. Peter |

whooooooweeeee!!!!!!! 100 BUCKS for 2 controllers!!! Yeah I'm cheap. I would like to save some $$$ to add borders to the track. Nice control box. Did you
build it yourself ?

Peter,
Can I use 45 ohm controllers for this project? I want to pick up the controllers locally but they only stock 45ohm. If not, I will have to place an order. Thanks, dpitts |

45 Ohm should work, fine. Check your Personal Messages for a translation to English.

i am using 2 ohm and 4 ohm controllers on my track.the only thing the ohm # will make a big diferance on is the reaction time the smeller the # the better
reaction time.but there are some tracks that will not handel the lower # like ho and the best for those is 45 ohm

Parma Controller with switch | ||
|
I just built a 25-35-45 ohm controller today using this article http://howorld.fsmra.com/archives/howto/controllermod/resistor.html I started with a
parma 45ohm resistor, single barrell. Soaked it in water for a day or two and brushed off the coating. I then made a holder out of a coat hanger and heated
it in the oven at 200 degrees for 5 minutes. Mixed up a batch of JB Weld, (doesn't take much) and coated the back of the resistor, then put it back in the
oven for 30 minutes. The Radio Shack parts I used were (1) #275-325 Toggle switch, (2) #271-1106 68 Ohm Resistor, (3) #271-1109 150 ohm resistor, and Heat
shrink tubing, #278-1610. This actually tested out to a 27-35-45 ohm controller. The article gives you all the information you need to build the controller.
I have used the same article to build a controller with 2 switches using the 120 ohm resistor. This gave me 7 different ohm settings. Use the formula to
determine what ohm resistors to purchase to give you the final ohm readings you want.

slotmanmoss, great article, but why did you heat parts up?
coating the back of the parma resistor with 2K epoxy is a good idea, this saves possible troubles for the future (moving wires on the resistor). dpitts, the 45 ohm would be fine, like Cjent said. |

I was following an article in Issue #3 of Scale Auto HO Quarterly from winter 1993 on building "The Econo Pro Controller" only following the epoxying
resistor part of the article. Heating the resistor before application of the JB Weld makes the epoxy flow easily. After heating/baking, it is dry, (no wait)
and glass smooth. The previous controller I built, I did not bake. Encountered no problems with it. Just figured I would try this to see how it came out, so
heating/baking is not essential.

Thanks Alan, now i understand. There are also some epoxy that get a better strength when heating them up. And the time to dry is shorter of course.
here are the pics of my modified controllers:
hope this helps, Peter |

Peter,
I like the way you did your controller with the switch in the bottom of handle, very clean and looks easier to do than the way I did mine. Heating the JB Weld gives it a very hard glass smooth finish. Will keep in mind if I build another variable controller. Alan |

Awesome topic! Just right for those of us who have multi scales, multi cars and are looking for one controller to do EVERYTHING!
