silly (but valid) question:
what is the difference between and Vac Form body and a Resin Cast body?

Vac form uses thin sheets of plastic. The plastic is heated and placed over the buck or diecast and air is suck out around from the mold causing the plastic
to collapse around the mold . The plastic is usually clear and you paint the body on the inside.
Resin form uses a clay or silicone to make the negative mold from a buck or diecast. Then resin is pour into this mold and sloshed around inside the mold or a second mold is made to place inside main mold to force the resin to form into shape . I'm sure the rest of the great folks here will find some sites to point you to for more info.Raunchy |

Look in Philippe's 1/43 Site, posted at the top of this Forum. I think everything you need to know is there.

I don't think that would hurt it. Just don't get carried away with the vacuum you could break the resin cast.

I recently pulled a vac off of a Carrera & SCX plastic body...one of the pulls got a free tampo job...other than that, it worked well.
Like M1 said, you may need to be careful with resin bodies and big vacuum. ![]() |

i use PETG 0.02" for vac-forming.
the advantage of resin bodies is the higher detail. The resin is poured into silicone negatives. Philippe has a nice description for resin cast bodies from Roger Corrie on his site. for pouring resin into vac-forms - you will not be able to get the resin cast out of the vac without destroying the vac, i think. Also i see no advantage in this way. lost details and higher costs. Peter |

for the price of doing vac forms and what the equipment cost and supplys and your time I think it would be cheaper to just purchase your vac forms from someone
here on the forum who already is set up to do them. Just my thought on it. Now for resin casting thats an extemely expensive project to get into. Just maybe I
can talk Lib into trying to vac form a resin cast car and I can tell you what happens.

there is a way to get more detailed vacuforms, just none of us are really set up to try it. Its basically negative pulling. Instead of starting with a positive
of the car and pulling plastic over it, which makes the interior of the car more detailed than the exterior, you use a negative of the var and pull the plastic
into it... Little more difficult to get good draw dow, usually requires a few well placed vacuum holes in the negaqtive mold, usually in the window areas if
the windows will be cut out. This leaves the OUTSIDE of the vacuform as the more detailed side. I've seen some still done this way with thinner styrene
instead of the .02 PETG that most of us use. The detail is really good. Not quite as good as the resin, because you still have all the same issues with
undercuts and the like, but better than regular vacuforms.
As far as where to get the plastic.. Someone onhere pointed me in the direction of Industrial Plastics. I buy my plastic in 4x8 sheets and cut down to 8x10. I get enough for about 150 pulls for about $40, so its reasonable. They have recently fixed their website to actually use https, so its safe to order online now. I just wish I had time to actually play with this stuff right now. Ive had plastic sitting here for about 3 months and have not had time to vacuform the new G-Machines I have picked up in the meantime, or to play with what I had...Got a cool looking elCamino that's begging to be closed off in the back and vacced, but there are only so many hours in the day. |

I buy my PETG from Industrial Plastic as well, Lib turned us on to them. Good service and good prices...
Hey Bill, glad to hear you're still hanging around! ;-) ![]() |

hey folks.... haven't been around much for a few months, (since like the first of the year or so) but I see a light at the end of this tunnel. Taking the
last class I need to take now to finally complete my degree (on the 22 year plan, figure I had to get it before I was over 40, since I missed the "have to
get it before I turn 40" deadline ;-) and the new version of my product at work ships mid August, and with the baby getting older and not being quite as
high maintenance as he was (wow, a year old now) I might actually have some time to look at my slot cars again.... Thinking of redesigning the track to reward
myself when things lighten up.. You guys have not heard the last of me.... don't even think of it... I still check in and read topics that catch my eye, so
you may bee me around a bit here and there, but expect more of me than you can handle when things clear out a bit.
