Raced some FLY classics the other night. The Ferrari 512 CL, Porsche 917 LH & 917-10K all look fantastic and also run really good. We also ran the FLY
Ferrari GTOs (I'm hoping htey make a yellow one soon). I hadn't run these cars in a long time and had almost forgotten how cool these were and what
great racing they provide. Of course we had to use my cars because no one else will run their own FLY cars because they look so good but that's ok. A
light tire sanding and they were ready. Can't wait to do it again.

Rich, that's one of our regular battles -- 512 CL vs 917 LH. They're both fantastic runners once tuned, and usually beat up on some Slot. Its using the
stock tires. I try to have at least one of these in my box wherever I go!

Hey Kurt...which one do you like the best non-mag?
I like the 917 and the 908 Flunder. "They Didn't Say You Couldn't" - Smokey Yunick

I'll butt in here and say that for my money a Fly 512s is hard to beat. The 908/3s are nice runners and a good 'ol Chevron is competitive as well. I have never found the 917ks to be as quick as the Ferraris or the various 908s. QC |

I've been finding the 917LH to be at the top of the heap. The only thing holding back a stock 917LH from being a monster is a shallow guide. Great
balance and stability, but you really have to make sure the tires are trued correctly.

We are running a Fly classic longtail series in our local club right now. EXCELLENT cars, all of them. The 512CLs are leading the pack right now but the 917s
aren't far behind. I love these cars but the best of the Fly classics is still, IMO, the 512S. Hard to beat.

What! No T-70 Lolas? (my personal favorite) They are all good though
You only let off the gas to keep the wheels from spinning...

I agree, the T-70s are great also but there's something about the 512S that makes it a great handling car.

We had Fly Classics on the track last night -- a few T-70's, a few 917K's, a 917 LH, a 512 CL, a 908/3, a 917/10...
One of the things I like about them is that they can all run really well, but each drives differently from the others.

I relly like the few that i have(T70/512/917K) What is a good replacement guide for these cars? The shallow stock guide is a pain.
Thanks, Have a good weekend everyone! Jim |

The Slot.it guide, #CH10 works great, it's a screw in guide but fits perfect. If you're running on wood, use the Slot.it CH17, guide for wood tracks.
It's even deeper.

I bought a 917 LH from somebody, used, and they'd replaced the guide with a Ninco spring-loaded guide. The nose sits a bit high, but the guide works well.
I'm sure it could be modified to bring the nose down.
But generally, I don't replace the guides, and we run them on wood tracks. Typically if the car is popping out of the slot, it's for an issue other than the guide being too short. It's usually something like the nose tripping over itself when a front tire gets caught in a fender. Fix the real issue, and the guide isn't a problem.

I ran a Fly Classic 3 hour Enduro (non-mag) a while back. Mods were unlimited so this is the result...

Damn! That looks awesome. Gotta love Fly classics! I just finished my Fly/world classics 1967 Ferrari 365 P2 "White Elephant". Although this is
certainly not on the visual level of a CL or 512s, it's still a Ferrari and looks prettey decent. The resin body was nicely done. I used a 512 chassis
from a fast kit so I know it will run well. I just need to find the proper wheels. I also built a Mantra 650 to broaden my classics field a bit. I really
enjoy racing unique cars that ran at Lemans in the 60's and 70's.
Back to Fly, they certainly have their little issues that need fixin', but they are undeniably some of the finest models available of these incredible race cars in slot car form. QC |

I bet she flew!
I bought a used 512 CL with some tall Slot.It gearing, original chassis, metal wheels, a 35k motor, and Fly tires off a Corvette C5R stretched to fit on the oversize rims. It's one of the most on-the-edge scary drives ever. The mesh is a little funny, so it makes this high-pitched metal-on-metal howling ruckus, then blows by like a scalded cat. I don't know what the
guy was thinking when he built it, but the car is hilarious like a scary amusement park ride.

Other than the C5R being at the top of the list, all of my classics are my favorite Fly cars.(The Saleen is up there too). I've said it before. Unless
there's just a crazy thing like a twisted chassis or something, these cars are like a good cabernet - the older they are and the more laps the better. (I
know - bad comparison). And they always look good. I may have to build a wood track just to run'm on. Pat

I Remember when I came back to the Hobby a few Years ago, I marvelled at the detail and how great the cars from Scalextric were out of the box and thinking how
far things had come during a 15 year break.
Eventually I stumped up the cash for some Fly Classics, which were #20 Gulf Porsche 917k and 512 CL (like in the Movie Le Mans) a Lola T70 and a 917 Spyder. All the way home, each time I stopped at the lights I would look at the cars and think how beautiful they were. Well I got 'em home and put 'em on the track and I was horrified, noisy, notchy things with split rims and dodgy front axles. I couldn't believe how bad they were compared to Scaley models at 1/2 the price. I was so dissapointed that I threw them back in their boxes and swore never to buy another. Then I found "Home racing World " and an article on how to make Your Fly classic into a Slotcar that ran properly, A few lengths of tube on all the wheel hubs, some new front axles and one or two other basic fly Mods and away they went. They are now among my most used cars. The only other "must have" mod is a set of Locally (Aussie) made MJK tyres which are a non silicone rubber and work well on plastic and wood. My 512 CL is a giant killler on all but Ninco track (not really sure why) and I know Rob (aka Gayblade) has a Giant killing Fly Chevron in his box of tricks. Maybe someone (with more computer skills than I have) can insert a link in this thread back to the HRW fly article for the purpose of those who haven't seen it.

Just before we ran the FLY Classics the other night my buddies comments were that they had bought some of these cars because they looked so good but were
disappointed when they ran them and had set them aside, they didn't want to get rid of them but didn't know what to do to them either. I think a lot
of people had similar experince with the FLY cars in general but I really don't do much to mine other than make sure they are properly put together, adjust
the braid, make sure they are well oiled and most improtantly sand the tires so they are round and concentric.
It is also interesting to me to hear someone compare the FLY cars to another brand because when these Classics originally were introduced there was nothing on the market that compared to any FLY car in terms of modeling detail. Of course that was ten years ago and everyone had to improve their products so I think FLY is the reason we have all of these wonderful and affordable 1/32 scale slot cars. |
