"LIP" On Top Of Track Table?? |
Lead | |
|
Going to be bnuilding a fairly large table (10 X 22). I'm going to use plywood for my top. How many of you use something like a 1 X 2 or 1 X 4 around the
table side so it give a "lip" around the table to help prevent cars from going off in the floor?

I used 1 x 6's to wrap the entire table and it gives me about a 2 1/2 lip all the way around.

This might be much for most, but this was designed for long term use where many folks lean over it. "They Didn't Say You Couldn't" - Smokey Yunick

I think at least 2 1/2" is needed to keep most 1/32 crashee's off the floor. If you run 1/43 cars, I'd suggest at least 3". How about cutting some strips from those interlocking rubber floor tiles? You could make them as tall as you want (maybe higher in hard to reach or sharper turn areas?), and they're soft enough to protect the cars. I've had more than one car disintegrate (well, ok..maybe that's a bit of a stretch) when crashing into a solid wood barrier, so I plan on using something as a cushion on my next table. dennis |

I used 1x6 on the sides and backside of the track, and left the front side open...

I used a lip on my table. About 2 1/2 ". Then I ran the indoor/ outdoor carpet over it, to give it some cushion. Works for me. and saved many cars!

I dunno about lips, but I give some "props" to those layouts!
Those look like great fun! Matthew
Shelf queens...I've heard of those, but I bought it to race it, not look at it.

Love the ideas, tracks and opinions. Rick, your track is special to me. My dad and I flew to get a piece of asphalt from Riverside when they tore it down. It
was the last chance we had to travel together.

I used some white insulation Foam boards from Home Depot. 1x10 by 4 ft. I think it was only $5 for 4 or 5 pieces. So far it has held up very well. I figure
it has a little give as opposed of wood. I attached it to the sides of my table with silcone adhesive.
