Hotwire cut, or carve a banked oval into the size of wood... Cover track surface with fiberglass cloth and epoxy... Plot and route lanes... Add copper tape and wiring. Stick trees in foam around track, paint and enjoy. I realize the recipe is vague, but the process has been ther' in the back of my mind... like a splinter. Maybe even ditch the ply entirely and put a joint in 1/2 way and add length to straights to suit venue. Its a work in progress.... Rod

(1) Because i wanted a wood routed banked oval that didn't weight 300+ lbs. when it was done. Then maybe I could transport it in sections to different venues. (2) "Sculpting" the track out of foam instead of backcutting/steaming/cutting abunch of pie pieces or bending wood... that looks like ALOT more work than what I am invisioning having to do with the foam technique. I was seeing in my head a 3x6 or 4x8 oval that could be carried by a child, and transported in a CAR and setup in minutes on any table....Someone MIGHT be wanting to take his Sprint Cars on the road and do demos at the parking lot at Eldora this summer. And yes I'm gonna build an oval but i didn't want to make a flat one....and I wanted to have scenery already on it...And I can't have it weighing so much I couldn't transport it ....somewhat like the ole' James Bond setup that sells for 3k on eBay. (I've never seen one in person) Rod

But, the plywood is an option to keep things somewhat lighter than MDF. Not sure about getting one light enough for a child to tote around though...Dad might have to help? However...seeing what your goal is...doing demos and such at shows, using a cheap Artin or other track would accomplish the same. It would make things faster and easier to build and solve issues of weight and portability, yet still allow you to showcase your toys. Make a light frame out of 1x4 pine and use foam board as a base. I say this as I built one and it is very light. This is larger of course (5 x 10) but could be scaled down. I also used decking boards for the frame to add increased durability, but simple and light 1x6's could do the trick to lighten things further. We used the least expensive plastic "grass" carpet to make things look better, yet still light. The 1x4's make a strong enough frame for the foam to rest on. The table was designed to be light enough to carry around for temporary racing. Here it sits in my friends living room for a night of digital racing. Just throwing out ideas... I've built several portable (flat) ovals over the years. One of them broke down into 8 pieces total. With that I could set up an oval with 8', 11', 16' or 19' straights. Each piece weighed maybe 30lbs. The easiest oval set-up I made was a 4'x16' oval that broke down into two 4x8 pieces. Very easy to move around with any pick-up truck. A full 4x8 sheet of 1/2" MDF weighs 65lbs. A 4x8 oval with the center cut out would weigh in at around 40lbs or less. And 1/2" MDF doesn't need any back cutting to bend into a banked turn. A small oval that size could be built in about three hours (including painting, taping & wiring). I really can't see any advantage to building a portable track out of foam. Also, banking an oval that small seems pointless. The cars really don't build up enough speed to take advantage of banked turns. A flat oval with a variable power supply turned down to 8-10v would be a hoot at the venues your thinking about. hot shoe "I must be behind on my cheatin' "

One thing that I don't get about your idea is what is the slot made of? Is it fiberglass, foam, plywood? I wouldn't think that foam would be up to the job. Fiberglass would be hard to lay as a 1/8" slot. I assume that the plywood is backing on the under side of the foam. Mike A
