Tires with more diameter that fit
|
I was going through all my tires in hopes of finding a set that will increase the diameter and fit within the wheel well without rubbing. I found that the
MRRC Shelby Cobra tires fit well, give a bit of extra width and hopefully add the needed clearance for you racers with rail problems. Here are the dimensions:
Stock Tire 20.45 mm = Outside diameter 7.75 mm = Tread Width Replacement Tire MRRC Cobra 22.10 mm = Outside diameter 8.45 mm = Tread Width Replacement Tire Scalextric Indy Dallara Fronts 21.15 mm - Outside Diameter 8.18 Tread Width If you have some MRRC Cobra Tires give them a try...If you don't I have a Urethane replacement available Here I also have the Indy Dallara fronts! Well, ran the heck out of my #22 Galaxie today -- pulled the body, drop of oil on the motor and axles, sanded the tires, and used Harry's suggestion of
some wax compound on the gears to break them in a little. Really quieted it down. Kept the body screws loose -- not sure how everybody else's was, but they
had the screws really cranked down tight -- too tight.
The car really runs great -- I'm on Scaely Sport and there's enough clearance with that spur gear --it's close, but it does clear. One final observation -- I've got a couple of small R1 sections on my track and the Mon-Rev is much better through these turns than the Carrera Nascars. Overall, a good day!

Wow- R1's are da debil! I know Carrera NASCARS are very hard to get through the NINCO R1 let alone the Scalex and SCX track. I also think the rails are
more flush on the Sport track, which also may help a good bit.

If you happen to have an 11T NSR sidewinder pinion sitting around, it's the perfect mate for this R-M spur...I don't have the patience to run in the
gears, though the #11 was relatively quiet compared to the #22 out of the box, a 11T Scalextric quieted down that one which in turn made the other sound noisy.
The NSR now makes the #11 whisper quiet other than the body harmonics.
One more thing that's making this old man more crotchety about the little things on these cars...pushing the #11 over its limits I managed to break off a rear taillight cover...now, no big thing, right - just find it and glue it back on - wrong. There's a pin on the cover that secures it to the body which is what I broke off, no real problem as one can just lightly apply some glue to the edges and let set...wrong...after finding the piece I tried to fit it back on before applying any adhesive...it wouldn't fit, flipping it either way it would not sit properly. I noticed that there was a small rib of plastic in the taillight opening on the body, but no corresponding notch/opening on the taillight cover piece??? How it fit properly before I haven't a clue, but I had to cut out the rib before I could put the cover back on. So, besides the above problem, the terrible gear mesh, the "want to kill someone" guide/lead hook-up, and the unnecessary axle play I do really like these cars...really. Other than the cost of a pinion, all of the other fixes just take a little time and effort (and frustration) to cure, but once done they do run well.

Oh brother, I still haven't gotten my #22 yet, but I'm starting to get that old "why can't they make a slot that runs AND looks good"
feeling again.....
Considering that this company made some outstanding slotcars and track in the 60's, it is even more dissapointing that the R&D for this company doesn't result in a bettor end result. Oh well, I'm hoping against hope that I don't regret this purchase. It's my first mono/revell purchase since the SE GS vette that I bought at a serious discount. QC |

hmm..... I like the adjustable chassis......
|
The way they did the front axle assembly makes me think they were thinking ahead when they chose to make the wheel base adjustable. Also they chose to use separate body post for the rear chassis mount, not the more common way that integrates the rear bumper mount. These two feature mean that this one chassis can be used for other body types. All that I did to mine was shim the guide, used the super glue trick on the axle slop, removed the magnets and put set of scale Mustang rears on and way she went. I did no more to this car than I do to any new car. The detailing is fantastic and they run great on my Carrera track with no additional weight added, banked turns and all. Great cars............ Thanks Monogram/Revell! I can't wait for the next ones.

After pulling the magnets out I wanted to put a set of MJK's (the ones that fit Scalextric Camaro & Mustang) on the back but were a bit too wide. Tried
to pull the wheels off to shorten the axle but couldn't. I lightly sanded the insides of the guards then put the MJK's on backwards (the bulging side
facing inwards instead of outwards) and presto no rubbing. Sanded the MJK's to get them round and it runs great, well great for a '63 Ford Galaxie. The
MJK's are a bit higher profile than the standard tyres so the gear dragging on the track is not a problem either.

I have the FireBall and Jarret cars. I solved the small tire problem by replacing the stock tires and wheels with BWA's, and whatever tires would fit the
rims. Of course the tire were trued up on a tire truer. The cars now have plenty of clearance and should be good to go. I also used the stock rims to make the
insert for the BWA's.
