Posts: 178 (05/12/08 02:56 AM) Home Racing Forum Veteran Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None G'day Guys, I've been spending a bit of well earned R&R messing around tuning various models... ....The NSR Mosler had a look in on the workbench, 2.1-2.2 seconds stock, a bit of messing around with pod suspension springs, tyres etc and its now turning ballistic 1.9 second laps on our weener layout.... ...BUT I DIGRESS! The BIG (literally) news is our Carrera Torino stockers I've been working on. Many people reckon they run like crap, but I've found if you spend a bit of time on them they can run pretty decently. Our pair (#27 and #43) ran very typically of how Carreras do on Scaley Sport track, NOT SO HOT! Times ranged from 3.6 for the #43 Petty car to 3.3 for the #27 Red Torino. Some judicious tuning and track time trying a few different set-ups netted a result of 2.5 seconds for the #43 car and 2.3 seconds for the #27 car!!!! Yes, that IS A HIGH MAGNET DOWNFORCE SET-UP, but the great thing with Carrera cars is that you can adjust the level of downforce to suit personal taste (they will turn in 2.7-2.8 second laps and still be nice and lively to punt around).... OK, to give you an idea of comparative performance, a well tuned (fresh) V8 Supercar (Ford Falcon BA) will run in the 2.6 second range, and a nicely tuned GB Track Chevron (all of these models use stock components) runs a slippery best in the 2.7 second range. I've got photos to do a "how-to" for this little project, will get them together with some blurbo and put it up shortly.... Later, Rupert.... Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	G'day Rupert, I know that you like to run a lot of mag attraction, but do you think that the high downforce (ie. drag) is slowing your cars down on the straights? And have you considered dropping in slightly hotter motors to compensate? And last, but not least, What do you mean, exactly, by the term "weener layout"? How long is it? Like 10 - 20 - 30 feet? And is it a Road course or an Oval? Just curious... Greg

Posts: 179 (05/12/08 05:00 AM) Home Racing Forum Veteran Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	G'day Greg, The layout is a shortened Scalextric Sport knock-off of Harry's Dixon Hills layout, the table size is 12 feet by a tad under five feet from memory... They do slow up a bit in the straights, too much of a good thing really! I personally prefer a light to medium magnet set-up on my cars (the GB Track Chevron is one of my favourite models to run, I hope this gives you an idea of what I like my models to feel like downforce-wise), so for me I'd probably dial out some magnetic downforce (screw the rear mag up tight and move the sliding magnet right the way forward). This set-up will still get you into the high 2 second bracket on my layout, which is pretty good considering these things are quite a "brick" weight-wise. I like this set-up as the lesser experienced people that use our layout can "take a magnet" for a walk (getting great times in the process, plus less frustration from not crashing as much), whilst the more experienced can wind off the magnet, giving a kind of parity to our racing. At least thats what I'm hoping with the class. As for motors, yes a hotter motor would probably help, but as to what extent I'm not sure as we use the standard Scaley wall-warts on our layout (one per lane). The stock Carrera motors have proven to be very strong for me personally, they can soak up the stock (tall) gearing and carry a horses weight (well, a small Shetland anyways) in magnetic downforce. Anyway, I'll get my "how to" post written up over the next couple of days.... Later, Rupert.... I have a how to in the tech section. Take the magnets out & put the good old NC-1 motor in them. Now there fun to drive on any kind of track & any kind of layout. We run the heck out of them & everybody loves them. The nice thing about my how to is ... if you don't like them ... you can put them back the way they were. My build-up uses the standard ride height, all I did was to get the body to be able to move around a bit on its mounting screws (David from RMS got me thinking on that idea with his write-up a little while back)..... ....I reckon these models are the best thing since sliced bread Later, Rupert....
