Airfix DB5 1/32 custom convertible in progress |

So I went to the hobby shop today and I find this model sitting there behind some stuff near the slotcars so I grab it and check it out and the roof is a bit
crushed down and had bent all the pillars so I go to the owner and he gives it to me for $1 and I bought some model master dark red and bring it home to mess
around with. So I cut the roof off and paint it up a bit trying to think what to do, I came up with this red a black color scheme. ill prolly need some black
numbers to put on the side.....maybe a black stripe up the middle?? I trimmed the glass and this is where Im at so far........is there a chassis that fits
this? Has anyone tried turning one of these to a slot car??

Nice looking automobile. You did excellent work with the paint job.
Re. the chassis: That's a tough one to answer without having the body in my hands. If you're looking for an off the shelf chassis... Depending on how much you want to spend, I might recommend a Slot.it HRS2, or an Artin skinny boy. You will probably have to do some surgery on the Artin. The problem looks, to me, to be the fender wells. It would probably be easiest to just remove them. Otherwise you may have to scratch one up out of brass which fits around and between them.

I googled images. You might be amused to scroll down and look at the Red DB5 Vantage Convertible. Your work is quite, quite good!
http://www.heritageclassics.com/astonmartin.html I'm guessing the HRS2 chassis should go under that. I'm thinking an HRS *might*. A PCS32 would definitely go under but would be a pain to work an interior into, and to tune a PCS 32 to work well is a pain. I'm thinking you'll have to do some cutting to that interior chassis /tray that came with the model if you even wat to use it at all. Evil thought. If you could find a Carrera DB5 chassis pan you'd be set, if the dimensions match.. I can find no one that's got that. Pendle sells the Carrera axles... Or, if you can find someone who had a Carrera DB5 and smashed the car or took the shell off and still has what's left... "89211 Front & Rear Axle Aston Martin DB5 25735, 25736 Ltd Stock 3.00" though you might be better off getting slot it axles and cutting to length. Good luck, looks like you have something rather nice there as a basis. Bob |

Wow, I thought it looked good as a coupe, but that drop top is really sharp. Nice work btw.

Your work is quite, quite good! Thanks Bob between you and Slider recomending the HRS2 I bought a anglewinder version to try out so even if it doesnt fit this application I have a decent chassis for a future project or to replace on a favorite car. I checked out that DB5 it looks real nice hehehe....im once I get the chassis I can figure out how to chop the interior to fit into the car. I thought it might be a nice runner up against a Mercedes 300 slr... |

Ok im kinda pushing boudries here but Im in the begining stages of making the cloth convertible and I see 2 possibilities.........convertible up and
convertible down.......I started with the intention of the convertible down and already made a frame that lays up against the back area to give that top down
look. The convertible will be made from a black umbrella as it seems to have the right scale texture and sheen to it.
Heres 2 pics just to give an idea

Ok im kinda pushing boudries here but Im in the begining stages of making the cloth convertible Go Man Go................. What a cool idea. I would probably go with the top down just because it would be easier. But if you made it "top-up" you might be able to salvage some of the damaged roof and cover it with your cloth. This probably should go it the scratch building section however I think a lot of people could be motivated by your project, I know I am.
