In the Spring of 1977, AJ Foyt and his crew chief decided to look into fielding a team in USAC. They heard about a youngster up Michigan way that could really
saw on the tiller so to speak. After watching Dave slice through the field and bag yet another checkered, they knew they found the right boy for the job.
That summer Dave "The Hammer" Dobner had a big time ride and he drove it like he stole it. Never placing out of the top 5 all season, he made the boys from down South proud, as well in proving he could trade paint with the best of them.
