Found a good way to clean rusty rails! |
Lead | |
|
I was experimenting in cutting some track pieces to custom fit for my layout. I wanted to test on an unused track first before I wrecked any of my good track.
The piece I grabbed was very rusty, but this was just an experiment so it didn't matter. I marked where I wanted to cut with a pencil, and noticed when I
went across the rusty rails the rust just sort of came off. I started scribbling on the rails more, and it takes the rust off, and leaves any good area alone.
Just thought this may be of interest if anyone has old track they would like to restore. I'm getting a carpenter's pencil today, and starting on my
Chevy Venture.

Hi Steve, I've used the eraser end of a pencil for years to clean track. Never thought to use the lead. Thanks . Bye the way, I assume you customize your
track piece by cutting a section out of the middle and then solder the two pieces back together. How do you make the track surface part look like it hasn't
been cut? What do you use as a filler?

Steve,
I just opened a box of Artin track from last year. Rust is not the word. I am now on my way to Office Depot to get a box of #2 pencils. Thanks for the info. I think that is called an Epiphany. Frank

Raceeng,
I am attempting to make an Artin-Scalextric classic adapter. My hope is to get the cut close enough to make any type of filler unnecessary. If I need to, I heard/read a trick to save the plastic shavings and powder from cutting, mix it with a little model glue, and you have a putty that is essentially the same material as the track. BSM,
I'm sure that the Artin and Scalextric tracks are different plastics and the same adhesive may or may not work for both, depending on what it is. It's pretty difficult so get anything to stick to scaley plastic. I'd recommend mixing up some of your paste with and make sure that it dissolves both plastics... try a spot of it on the back side of each kind of track, to make sure it's going to stick, before taking a chance on messing up the road surface after you've done all that work.

Anyone can restore a classic car, but it takes a real Hotrodder to cut one up and make it cool!

Thanks for the tip. I have some very old and rusty Revell track [and some Strombecker/Bachmann track] that could use a good cleaning.
