May I ask how many products...and a manufactured slot car is a product...do you purchase that have inherent flaws that you keep and work on to correct rather than be in the return line ASAP?



Note, I am not talking about how one feels about a car's performance or appearance, but rather flaws that should have been seen (and heard in this case) and corrected before the product was made available.



In the case of these R-M stockers, both the terrible gear mesh and undersized tires are both items that should have been corrected before releasing them to the public...and not all purchasers of slot cars are "hobbyists" that have the knowledge to correct these flaws. Actually, the majority of those that purchase slot cars are not hobbyists and do expect them to perform properly in the same way as buying a toaster or hair dryer or whatever product.



If Scalextric, Carrera, and SCX can manufacturer slot cars that are overwhelmingly flawless as a product for the most part, then taking R-M to task especially for either the too large spur gear or too small diameter tire is not bad-mouthing the company, but pointing out something that needs to be fixed and hopefully they will do so in future production...again, not talking about performance/appearance, but just that they do run properly when taken out of their cases.



I applaud R-M for all the cars they have produced...got to give them a whole heap of credit for bringing out a Trabant...and all their other cars I would put in the same reference as the 3 manufacturers mentioned above as they were ready to run.



On a somewhat related issue - that "upright" motor mounting layout - actually the motor can be made to lay down in the more normal sidewinder position rather easily if one wants. I found this unintentionally by trying different pinions to quiet the mesh which required some cutting of the motor mounts to align the gears for some of the combinations...I also tried a different motor that required a bit more surgery and found after all the trimming the motor layed down nicely (though needing to be hot glued in place) and surprisingly the stock gears meshed a bit quieter than before...however, I did not notice an immediate improvement in handling, nor expected such as the difference in weight being lowered is quite small.
