Masada is the placeof the last stand of the Jewish Zealots in the war against Rome in 66-73 -- Rome won but this is the toughest ancient fortress I have ever seen. Watch the old movie with Peter O'Toole if you want a perspective. When on the dead sea, which is getting lower and lower we were 1330' BELOW sea level. It is the lowest place on earth. The Israeli jets will fly below sea level. Incredible. Qumran is where the found the Dead Sea Scrolls. The writitings are of a Jewish Religious sect called the Essenes and contain the oldest copies of portions of Jewish scripture known. We are staying in the Palestinian quarter.
