There are a lot of criticisms on the thread that are very valid.
Keep in mind, Scalextric basically sells toys for folks and kids to slap on the track and run around a lot, usually keep on because of the heavy mag downforce and destroy every so often so one has to buy more. Their cars run well with no work on their track. People have fun with them. For serious competition, with a couple of notable outstanding exceptions or if someone has incredible talent with building and tuning (The Camaro Trans-Am is the notable exception in my mind, maybe the new Chaparral), they're not really good choices for serious racing. Unless it's a spec class where everyone's running them. They're going for overall sales to kids, families, etc. Every so often we hardcores/old-schoolers get thrown a nice bone. I can't gripe. Carrera I think has the same philosophy. They make what they make in the same style for their track and their fans. They seem to have done a little to try and address the gearing issues, etc., but they're much the same as scaley in terms of what they do and why. Suprisingly, a couple of their offerings aren't bad non-mag depending on what you're trying to do. The Ferrari Uovo actually had some potential when I mucked with mine a bit. Their 1/24 cars are hilarious fun to run against each other. NINCO, I feel is a mixed issue altogether. They're who I cast my vote for. On one hand- their NC-5 and 6 motors are quite good! Again- on their tracks, their product is fun and runs well. But!---- They have so much potential as compared to the two I mentioned earler to compete with, but the chassis design is letting them down badly. I'm seeing too many of these cars with chassis failures, etc. in non-mag racing or just fun folling around racing. One of my IHSR friends took one of the NINCO Super GT cars and with his masterful modelling skills (And I mean masterful!) installed a slot.it AW pod into the back of it, and kept the rest of the car pretty much the same. This "Slinco" as we called it was every bit the compeition for an NSR Mosler. I know. I barely held him off, and had he made one less mistake, would have beaten me I think. NINCO needs to go to a pod, like everyone else that's serious have. They're so close- yet they continue to muck with rear ends that crack and split. Put a pod in it like let's see... SCX, NSR, Slot.it, and Spirit have. If they did, I believe we'd be talking seriously about NINCO as being the best out there for serious racing and for fun racing. I'll stick my neck out and say if NINCO made an AW pod and stuck it in their Ascari- it would be the "Mosler Killer" everyone claims they have but don't. Revellogram- I'm so frustrated with in so many ways I could cry. Maybe the Lola and the NASCARS will change my mind but I somehow doubt it. Goofy Tuner cars. Beautifully detailed cars that run bad. Why didn't I vote for them as dropping the ball!?!?!? They have never had the ball in their hands to begin with! So, they can't be accused of dropping it! As for Fly, at least they have shown some decent cars lately- that Fly Racing Alfa is a very good product. I like mine a ton. But it seems as the value of the Euro has climbed, I've stopped buying their cars. Which is sad. SCX is trying new things, and I think has responded to a lot of the gripes. A motor with a bit more everything, developing a pod, the Pro Race cars- I'm impressed with what seems to be some honest efforts to do some nice things with their product. I've always liked their stuff for the fact it's great for beginners, tough, easy to run, and is a blast to race against each other, but it seems they're trying to get beyond that. Good for them! As for Slot.it and Spirit, they're doing their things well. Very well. Good product. Fast, and good non-mag or mag. Quality. Avant Slot has brilliant ideas, just not quite on pace as of yet with my Mosler. Yet is the operative word there I think.... And NSR is going to be releasing a FordGT MkIV next year. About the only gripe there might be that there isn't a lot of variety of cars, but what there is, is quality, and a lot of fun to compete with. The cars make me look good. Anything that can do that is incredible. Just my 2 cents. Bob |

Very true. But there's a lot of things to think about when critiquing the various manufacturers. They all have various goals and objectives and cater to different types of fans. Keep in mind the readership here, at SCI, and at Foroslot and SlotForum are likely the tip of the iceberg in terms of sales and the people they sell to. Then again, looking in my apartment and all the cars all over the place... maybe I buy more than the average scalex customer...

Bob, good point. Just to put things into perspective even a bit more, membership on some Spanish message boards is over 10,000!!! Slotadictos has over 14,000
members. Just adding to Bob's point about tip's of icebergs.

Yes Dave!
And remember, I'm rather certain NINCO, Fly, and SCX are mainly catering to the spanish 'slotadictos', since it is their home market. Every so often, we'll get something nice over here that might coincide with their interests. Which might mean NASCAR has more of an international footprint that I previously thought. I've been wondering how SCX ever came up with the Dale Sr. car. My guess is, someone told them the guy is more or less the equivalent of Ayrton Senna to NASCAR fans and they'll go looney for the car.... Speaking of which- I'd like to see more cars in the vein of the F1 greats of all eras. Hopefully we will see more. Bob |

Hey Mike,
Who has the most wins so far this year in Sprint Cup ? Ford's = 2 Dodge = 1 Toyota = 1 Chevy = 0 (LOL ) and Pecos Kid said in the Poll & I Quote " Example: Carrera has dropped the COT for 2008. It's was the first with it, It's a great car, but they dropped it. now SCX, Scaley are both adding COT's. " |

After looking at my SCX Pro Race Audi I just obtained, I'm even more convinced NINCO needs a pod. Especially after making Pro Race components for about
every other component of their cars.
If SCX can make the Pro Race Audi- there's no reason they can't step up, and they should. Think about it- their market also includes some extremely serious slot racing. They had to fight with an advertising campaign in Spain to get their NC-5 and especially their NC-6 accepted into the Spanish leagues because of the field leakage both motors have. The only way I can see that they're getting away with this is if the type of classes they run are making sure their chassis are the only ones allowed. And yes, a good adjustable chassis is hard to come by- consider building chassis for you cars using some of the brass BWA chassis components. I think that might be the best direction to go for some of my projects. Bob |
