Best clear? |
Lead | |||

Guys - I've been a "future" fan for the past few years and it has served me well but I'm thinking about using a rattle can clear on my next
project - what kind do you recommend? Will be sprayed over generic Wal-Mart and like rattle can paints and usually Patto's decals.
Thanks in advance Mark |

Many great paint jobs have been ruined by clearcoat.
If you are doing a Nascar check, www.427cars.com Over 600 1/32 scale decals available made right here in the USA. Thanks Jim

I find that if I just use Future fragile decals will easily get rubbed off. I clearcoat with Dupli-Color automotive spray. The stuff can be a little hot, so it
is safer to coat decals with Future before overcoating with the Dupli-Color. For extra shine I finish up with a couple of coats of Future.

Mark, like Jim, I have tried them all also. I like Testors glosscote 1261. It's probably the same as Jim's answer but in a generic can and can be found
at many craft stores. Duplicolor clear is alright to paint over lacquer paint but I would be hesitant to spray it on the Walmart paint and definately don't
use it on decals. Decals will curl up. I know because I ruined a car once trying it.
The secret to spraying the Testors 1261 is to first shake well and then do a squirt away from the model to prime the nozzle. Then go over the body with two light coats keeping about 10-12 inches from the model to prevent runs. Let dry for several hours. |

9car fan wrote:Great advice, I believe #1261 and #1961 are the same, just different brands from the same company. I have wondered if we could spray clear over Future, now I know. Thanks for the tip. Jim

Mark, also don't get Testors Gloscote1261 confused with Testors "High Gloss Clear". High Gloss Clear is enamel based and will eat decals. Again I
know because I sprayed it on a decal sheet once and it did.

color place clear | ||||

i use wal-mart .99cent paint on a lot of my cars.
i have good results out of the clear as well. it is called color place,and it's in a blue can and cost .99 cents per tall can. i think it must be wal-mart brand? has no one else ever tried it? if you gonna use wally world paint,why not use the clear also? jd |

jd, have you used the Wal-Mart clear over decals? How does it do? I have a can and have used it over paint but not on decals.

jd - I would be interested to see your response to 9car's question. I really like the colorplace paint - I think it's as good quality as the more
expensive spray cans like Krylon etc - but I have yet to try the clear because I would be worried it would damage the decals.

so far,so good for me. | ||||

yeah,so far,so good.
i have used it on all my cars so far and had no trouble with decals lifting. i have done several model cars using another brand paint just because the color was not avail in color place,but i did clear over the decals once applied too. always mist your first few coats is what i do. i just wish they had more colors to choose from. i learned something new also. i didn't know you could use clear,or any paints over the future. is this true,clear over future? jd |

I dont know if its the best or not but I use Tamiya clear because its the only clear my local hobby shop sells & its convient. I have never had a problem.
