Fly PLAYBOY question.... |
Lead | |
|
Now first off, I enjoy the view of the ads once in a while but is Fly wasting their time and money on these cars? Is anybody buying them? It's OK if you
are but we've had next to NO calls at all on these. Even the 917k long tail that normally sells out, I've not had any interest. Just wondering.

I like the cars, but not the cost. If the price was around $50 maybe.

Good question. I only know of one racer that has collected them all so far, but no one else I know of is getting them, or at least trying for the entire
series.

are still other manufactures still selling cars for under $40. In todays economy, Fly just doesnt work for me anymore.

I have to go along with the rest of the guys, they're just a little pricey.
I have gotten a few but off eBay for $55 shipped.

Anyone can restore a classic car, but it takes a real Hotrodder to cut one up and make it cool!

I have no interest in them. Give me a racing livery, something with numbers and sponsor logos, even a fake racing livery would interest me more. If I feel like
looking at an image of a beautiful woman the hood of my slot car seems like the last place I would care to look.

I think Playboy chicks are very nice and I thoroughly enjoy slot cars, but the combination of the two as in the Fly slot cars series feels strange to me, and a
little embarrasing. There was a time when some of the R/C model airplane magazines had bikini chicks on the cover of every issue, and I could never get used to
that either.
It´s not that I´m prude, I just don´t like it, and I can see how this stuff might provoke wives & girl friends, with some justification. Maybe I´m old-fashioned...

Can't buy these cars, I've got kids in the house, how would that look if Dad had these. I think Fly makes wonderful cars and I plan on buying this next
week some of them, but these cars are on the BIG NO list, it will be a niche type car, maybe for a single man, or a guy with a progressive wife.

I too like the Fly cars. Not necessarily the Playboy cars. I would love to have all of their March F-1's but not for $60+. I think the Lady Racer car is
beautiful but I am not going to shell out $85.00 + tax for it.

A couple of things: the perception of the downturn in the economy makes fantasy liveries all the more hard to justify when many many slotters already have more
than 2 cars (anything more than the number of lanes you have is considered excessive to my wife).
Second, at first introduction, I thought these were a bad European stereotype of what they thought "Americans" would like to see on their cars. Perhaps the folks at FLY watched a few too many episodes of "Pimp my ride" and figured we are all just wanna be gangster wannabees inside? There was something definitely lost in translation on this concept collection. Lastly, they are applying the liveries to cars that are not that popular. The 917LH is hated by many. The Lister is disliked my most if $29.99 ebay pricing (and no sales) is any indication. The others are on cars that we have too many of already in real car liveries. They should have left this set of cars to magazine subscribers only... |

super8mm wrote:I think that's a good point. Coupled with the expanding (and higher quality) slot car selection available to us, buyers are getting more selective. This is the kind of thing that I might have gotten 3 or 4 years ago. 3 or 4 years ago, there might not have been 20 other cars ahead of these on the list to buy. I could probably go through the manufacturers' current line-ups, and pick out 50 cars that I'd rather buy. Even setting aside a stupid amount of dollars monthly for slot cars, these things just don't even show up on the radar. Who knows -- maybe it's a collector's item in the making...
OK, ok, I promise to leave that one alone.

I am always trying to involve kids in our hobby and I don't want to mix Playboy with Playtoy.

G'day Guys,
I think they are pretty silly actually, as mentioned elsewhere, love the hobby for the absolute deluge of models based on actual racing cars, not for the Quasi cool of what is really something a little sleazy (sorry, but gave up girly magazines after high school!)... ....and no I mean to offend no-one, just expressing an opinion

I think the 512 is a sexy beast, and I have the red #15 FastKit to run with my yellow Fly Lola. (I paid $34.99 a piece).
I really don't feel the need to exploit women so some corporate slob can line his wallet with my hard earned $ On a side note, the wife wants to know why there's not a Playgirl livery?

I can see Jim's point: if you're trying to promote the slot car hobby to children, exposing them to it with the Playboy cars isn't so good. Maybe the cars would sell better if the magazine covers weren't printed on the cars? Honestly, that's the only thing that bothers me about the cars. I don't really care for the magazine covers on them.

I think they're silly, macho-oriented, and obviously a ploy toward the thought that men have weak minds and only think about scantily clad women.

Sitting here watching the Rolex series in the distance on the big screen... part of me wonders if FLY was pressured to offer these paintjobs in trade for being
given permission to use the Playboy livery on their soon to be released Daytona Prototype/Rolex cars. Hmmmmmmm.....
