New Targa Florio inspired Track in progress |

It's been a while since I posted here, but always lurking. I sold my old track, and I've started a new SSD track inspired by the Targa Florio. Still in progress, but here are some pictures.

Thanks for the kind words. A little more about the track. It's a 12'x6' SSD layout and about 65ft long. I constructed it on three 4x6 tables that can be taken apart to work on the middle parts of the scenery. It will also make it convenient when I try to sell the track. (Well, I'll race on it a bit before I sell it, but 1/2 the fun is in the building so when I'm done building, then I'll be looking to start all over again.) Most of the construction is built from layers of styrofoam, which is more than sturdy enough to support the weight of the (very heavy) plastic track. Here and there, other techniques are used. In this photo you see two of the tables separated to facilitate the work.

That is just too cool. Space is well utilized as well with plenty of action packed racing. Excellent work on the scenery.

Some of the elevations of the track are evident in the below photo of the far left side of the track. This is the end of the long straight, which in the Targa Florio, is along the ocean front. To be sure, this is my own interpretation, which includes a small dock. There is lots more work to do here, but it gives some further impression of the track.

I'm new to this stuff, where did ya get the rocks/stone?

Re: New Targa Florio inspired Track in progress | ||

The rocks/stone made from molds and cast with plaster or Hydrocal and then painted. YOu can get the molds from local shops that sell scenery, especially model rr shops (or get them online). Here's an in process photo -- you can see I'm piecing together a large rock face from a smallish mold using plaster to fill and glue it together. Some were old pieces and some freshly cast and yet to be painted.
![]() I find that details make a big difference in the scenery. Here's two nice new details, the cones from my kids old RC ZipZaps and a little wooden boat. ![]() And the left side mostly finished... ![]()

Here's a little update and how I did it. I'm working on the back cliffs, the typical treacherous mountain cliffs known to the Targa Florio. I've built the elevations up using styrofoam, but I need to attach plaster molds so I put some plaster cloth over the styrofoam so that the molds will attach. Here's what it looks like before I attach the plaster molds. I'll attach the plaster molds before they totally set up so that I can create a rounded look that will follow the edge of the road.
![]() Then all that's left is to attach the molds and blend them together and paint. For paint, I use a black wash base, "raw umber", "raw sienna," and white, and I blend them together (but not too much). Here's how the layout is now beginning to look. ![]() And, finally, one photo that gives you a little sense of the elevations on the track (a total of 20"). In the canyon, I'm thinking of putting a little pond.

Now I've turned my attention to the right side of the track where I'm putting in a piazza. Got the fountain in, but haven't done any of the real buildings yet. This is a real hoot to drive with some action at the crossover! I was reluctant at first to use a crossover, fearing the carnage. But we raced it hard for 3 hours with 20 plus people (4 drivers at a time), and there were occasional accidents, but no real carnage. We raced three classes -- the Ninco Classics, the MiniCoopers, and the Porsche Boxsters. The Classics and the Coopers were the most fun!

Awesome piazza! Great fountain. Although the loop may not make for great racing, it would be cool to carry a slide all the way around.

I've continued to work on the village area. The pavement is all in, and I'm working on a version of "signature" building that is seen in many photos of the Targa Florio, the Church in Campofelice.
