my first paint job |

After a lot of tape and even more frustration I have somehow managed to paint my first car. Started out as a Slot.it white kit and used Tamiya primer and
paint, staying away from Model Master from now on...

Thank you very much!
For my next project I have a Jaguar white kit that I'm going to paint the same way, the only difference is the base coat will be orange instead of silver. And the fun continues... |

Thank you everyone, I appreciate your comments. My poor photographing skills actually help in hiding a lot, but overall I'm happy with it.
I actually tried painting a car a long time ago with disastrous consequences, I got really discouraged and started doing other things like modifying the bodies, lowering them and whatnot. When I decided to enter the Slot.it shootout I had no intentions of painting a car, so I bought the Goodwood McLarend and thought that was it, except that I couldn't help myself but to mess with it which made the car illegal. I needed a car and the white cars were cheaper so suddenly I had no choice but to paint a car. After shooting the primer I had the "orange peel" thing happening again so I filled a tub with Pine Sol, dipped the car, threw out the Model Masters primer and paint and bought Tamiya. Once I figured out that it was worth spending a little more on the Tamiya paint it went a lot smoother. The paint looks a lot better than Model Masters, goes on smooth and dries really fast. I think I did about 3-4 really light coats of each color. I read that you're supposed to do one or two light coats and then a heavier coat but I was afraid of having the paint run. I followed a lot of the advice I read on here and other sites about what to do, like warming up the spray can in hot water, etc. all tips that I think really helped. To all of those who took time to post those tips, a HUGE Thank You! The biggest lesson, and one that although I read time and time again I'm still not sure I learned, is do not rush! There are a few mistakes that would not have happened if I had taken a little more time to be careful, instead of trying to work on it in between jobs. The Tamiya masking tape is amazing and I can't say enough good things about it. I masked over the silver over the course of two days and when I pulled the tape off after spraying the orange there were no bleed lines, except where I didn't tape correctly. The best thing about all this is that I gained a little confidence in painting and I'm really looking forward to the next one. |

Man,that looks great. are you gonna start doing for others?
I may get hold o you to give me some tips on that layout?. That color combo really looks great 2gether i think. I paint a few once in awhile with a rattle can. Hadn't had the air brush out since i quit restoring redline hotwheels. In the last year or so I have built a few models and i have found that there is paint at Wal-Mart for .98 a can.(BIG CAN) And it really goes on smooth if you do the light coats(ar least 2) b4 you start laying it on about 12 inches away at a turtles pace.(not a snail now) I am not that good but I think they have turned out rather smooth for rattle can. They don't have that many colors but they do have 2 or 3 diffrent colors primer. It is at Wal-Mart and in a blue can called colorplace.(wal-mart brand) Again,let's know the secret of that tape laying technique cause it moves. jd |

orange peel | ||

orange peel in paint comes from a couple diffferent problems that may be going on. If you are using an airbrush to apply your paint and you have the ability to
adjust your air pressure take a test run on a piece of scrap and see if you need to go up or down with the air pressure. if thats not curing the problem either
your paint don't have enough thinner in it or to much thinner in it. to much thinner will make the paint flash before it has somoothed out and not enough
thinner won't let the paint smooth out all both creating orange peel. but if you come out with orange peel don't be afraid to take after the car with
the lightest grain sand paper you can get and water. when done sanding then break out the buffing compound and work it over a little and the shine comes right
back. good luck and have fun.
GOTTA SLOW DOWN TO GO FAST!
