Fitting the spec K&D tires to my 2 cars didn't improve lap times at all...not surprising as grip wasn't much of an issue with the stock tires. I've sinced reworked both cars...the Scalextric #8 Mad Dog Taurus received a new s/w chassis and now has the Fox II motor out of the Artin #94 Sunoco. The #94 body has been retired and the chassis now sports the retro #28 of Fred Lorenzen and is powered by a Scalextric slimline in the same offset position. I've also did some weight tuning on Alan's #48 Unity Project Taurus and the ScaleAuto motor has been replaced with a Spirit S3X. All 3 cars have eclipsed the now previous lap record: #28 - 2.66 / #48 - 2.65 / #8 - 2.51 Both the #28 and #48 are as pleasant to drive as Van's was and I believe should do very well at the other tracks - the #8 is definitely still a mad dog to drive - wildly fast that it can give up some handling, but I still have time to tame this critter some more. Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Bruce, I tore down my roadcourse this weekend to test my cars after the arrival of the K&D tires. Lap times were the same as with Scaley tires. 2.7 secs. This is 8' straight with a quad oval 1 straight with R3 banked turns. I tested both with and without banks before the first cup series. Motors have been ordered. Slot.it Orange Can, Yellow Can, NSR Shark. I also found the black can Slot.it at FW which will be ordered. Can't wait to start the testing. I did notice that the K&D tires must be glued to the wheels as were my Scaley tires. They came off the rims a few times in the curves.

Sounds like your's is similar to VS in size and layout so a 2.7 appears to be a good time - I'm running at 12V which is more than enough power...especially for the #8 car which will probably be in the .4's when I'm done (hit a 2.50 last night). Yes, the K&D's definitely need to be glued to the wheels - I don't believe they are "over-sized", but that the softer rubber makes them fit looser. As long as they give the same or better traction on the various tracks as the stock tires did then I'll be happy since my main goal was to get all on equal footing. Da Vols - Bruce & Harriet & Kali

Tricky deciding which one too enter..I think I would err on the side of the easy to drive car.....I did this with my CPR Lola nothing spectacular but easy to drive.. Regards Alan

Posts: 4508 (03/13/08 09:33 AM) HRW Moderator Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Alan - Good news too for your #48 as it tripped the lights at a 2.50 - very easy to drive even over the limit (only one deslot in all the testing I've done) and drifts quite nicely in the turns with good brakes and acceleration and no fall off in lap times after a number of laps. As to the "erring" thing - well, I'm real good at doing that in these proxy races - so I will be entering the #8...it's just too fast for comfort on such a short track as mine. It's interesting how much lap times have fallen since gaining even a consistent half a tenth is a big improvement considering the track's length/layout. Da Vols - Bruce & Harriet & Kali

Total inside lap length 27'8". Scaley car with mags 2.1-2.2 SCX car with mags 2.2. SCX car that was in Forums Cup #43 2.6 with K&D tires that are not glued on yet. #88 Scaley Taurus 2.7 with Scaley Tires 2.6 with K&D tires. Still waiting for motors to arrive. May call PM to check on the status of my order today. Ordered a Carrera lap counter on e-bay last night so I can get rid of the Scaley lap counter and clock to .00 or does it go to .000? Anyway got a good deal at $27 buy it now when others were selling them for $47 and $49 buy it now. Called PM motors shipped 3-12. Maybe they will be here tomorrow. Been told the motor I ordered for the SCX doesnt have a long enough shaft to reach the crown. Maybe I can make it work or I may be rethinking my motor for that car. Put the Slot.it 21.5 in the Scaley Taurus running with Scaley tires. Ran consistant 2.7 laps fast lap 2.6. Stock gearing. Slides a lot in the turns and spins at take off. The stock Scaley and SCX car also turn 2.7 laps. With this small 27'8" oval you are at full throttle for only a blip before you are braking for the turns. I did add another 3.5 oz under the rear axle. Total car weight is now 115 oz. PM was out of the pinions so I'll either have to order from someplace else or take 2 off other motors. I'm thinking I will test gear changes on the Scaley and Carrera using the pinion gear since both these cars use the dreaded knurled axles. Dont want to make it any worst taking the wheel on and off testing. Can't decide if I'll put the 25K Slot.it in the SCX or the Carrera. I also have a NSR Shark 22.4K Think I'll start testing the Carrera tonight stock no mag to see how it runs stock and get a baseline for adjustments.

Posts: 4515 (03/17/08 07:07 AM) HRW Moderator Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Arrold - I think a problem you might be having is the high voltage you're running - the Scalextric is 18K @ 12V - with the Scalextric wall unit it's probably revving in the mid-20's and those other motors will be even faster making it hard to get the handling right...making you add more weight than necessary. Don't know if those K&D's are offering better grip than the stock tires for you, but when the rev's go up even the best tires have only so much grip to give. Most of the tracks in the series will be around 12V which would be a good voltage to test at. All the lap times I've posted are at 12V and can't imagine trying to drive them at any voltage higher. If I host I may need to consider an alternative power supply. Maybe after I get my taxes done I can build a table and get it off the floor and have driver stations. Not being much of the electrician I guess you could still us an alternate supply on the floor. I would just need to figure out how to do it. Thought about taking the straight out of the turns to make it a full turn or going with a D shaped oval whats your thoughts? If I stay at stock Scaley voltage I dont think I will be doing guys a lot of justice with their cars. Give me your opion. Maybe I should wait until next yr to host when I know i should be off the floor and have a adustible power supply. But last yr you ran yours on the floor didnt you! May have found the answer. Notice most guys use a Pyramid 26KS or something run $45-75 on ebay. On the power thing - the Scalextric power supply at 16V is roughly a 40% higher output than the 12V most motors are rated at...don't know for sure if that percentage is also the same gain in rpm's, but if so then an 18K motor would be putting out around 25K at that higher voltage. I've never understood why all the manufacturers use this high voltage (Artin excepted) in their sets...and probably why trying to go non-magnet is no fun at all with that much voltage. As to a replacement power supply - the Scalextric one is AC that is converted to DC at the track's power base so a DC power supply is not usually recommended - don't know if PM's is an AC unit...probably since it costs more than the Ninco one shown, and the Professor knows this slot car stuff inside & out - so that's a good choice. Way back when I had Classic I used a Ninco power base grafted to a straight section (just need to solder 4 wires to the rails) - takes Sport plugs and has a reverse switch - and I still have that one now on my Artin using a 12V 5A power supply I found on EBAY for under $20.00 shipped. To me, if you don't want to use magnets, then 12V is ideal...motors like the standard Scalextric, Fly, Carrera, R-M have plenty of speed...SCX's and Artin's are a little on the slow side...and you also gain some traction with the stock tires (use some Rustoleum texture spray paint and you'll never need aftermarket tires). A 10V is good for the higher revving motors like Slot.It, NSR, etc.. As to the oval layout...up to you on that. This is just my opinion and based on my running by myself the majority of the time and my limited space, I prefer a more complex oval as it requires more driver skill so it's less boring - a normal oval with continuous turns is far easier to drive than a quad oval which has short straight sections in-between the turns. A D or tri-oval depending on how tight the turns are is also easier to drive than a quad...I used R1 60's & R2 30's for my FC tri-oval layout and wish I had the room to have that on a table as I really liked that Pocono-ish like layout than the TN-shaped quad I have now.
