Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None Doing my very first repaint on a Scaley Mustang. Looking at getting some Pattos decals either in waterslide or peel-n-stick. Now the last time I've messed with waterslide was about 20 years ago when I built models. Now the peel-n-sticks seem to be easier, but what about with clear-coat or future applied to them, would they curl? Matthew Shelf queens...I've heard of those, but I bought it to race it, not look at it.

Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I have put Krylon Crystal Clear over peel and stick decals with no problems. It would be best to do a test to try out the combination of decals and whatever clearcoat you favor.

Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Matthew: I asked Bruce (Patto) that question before - he said the peel and stick decals are heavy duty so you shouldn't need any clear, but he recommended future if you really wanted to put something over them. I have not used these before but have heard that they can be difficult to apply to curved surfaces. I asked Bruce about this too and he said to use a hair dryer to heat the decal slightly as you are applying it. Would be interested to see how you make out because I want to give the peel and stick decals a shot at some point. Hope that helps Mark

I have been applying waterslide and Peel and stick since the late 70's. A signmaker taught me a valuable lesson, after he heard me complain that I ddin't get my peel and stick decal exactly where I wanted it and when I lifted it to move, I ruinied my beautiful paint job. The advice below comes with a money back gaurrantee. THE SECRET FOR SUCCESS Mix a very small amount of dish soap with water and wet the back (sticky) side of your decal. Place it where you want it, the soap and water will allow you to move and position it Another benefit is that the water allows you to squeege the air bubbles out that you trapped when you laid the decal down. The soap and water will evaporate and your adhesive will do its job just as though the water had never been used.

The paint is done on the 'Stang and I'll get the decals from a buddy I race with so, we'll see what the end result is. I can say, it's not a professional paint job, but it does let me think with some cheap paint, decals, and the proper prepping, it's just really cool to see positive results. I used to manage a company & we bought large slide decals for our car doors with all the usual info. When we applied them, we used to spray the doors down with a diluted 409 soap solution previous to application. It allows you to slide the decal all over the place, but once it's sqeegeed down and dried, they have been through years of weather outdoors and countless car washes with no problems. Greg

You say Bruce said heat them with a hair dryer. Do you do this while off the car and then position them. I wouldnt want to melt the body.

They are much to thick and give the appearance of a toy car. Using a hair dryer directly on your car puts you in danger of warping the plastic and/or ruining the paint. I am not saying you can't do it, rather I am warning you that there is a danger and if you choose to do that, you must proceed with caution. Also consider that if you need to "stretch" the vinyl decal material to force it to fit over contours, your decal may then (in time) wish to revert back to the original size and the adhesive may not be strong enough to hold it in place. To me it sounds like a battle not worth fighting and I would use waterslide. Good Luck
