I'm actually borrowing my in-laws truck to do this as he himself has some scrap metal and I have about a ton of rebar that came with our house. it was used for tomato stakes, marking stuff in the yard, and only God know what else.

I usually try to pick stuff like that up where possible, and if I know I'll use it.

I even got a really nice set of Z-28 wheels out of a field a few years ago. If you have a pickup, don't do anything special except watch while you drive. If you don't have enough for slot cars you ain't diving! I am buying a SlotIt Porsche tomorrow for $0.00 out of the family budget. If you have a clunker you drive to work, remove the rear seat and you have your scrap collecting car. I found a Toro lawnmower in the garbage last year that couldn't have been more than a month old.

The only thing I had to do to get it to run was put gas in it!
