Buy yourself an automotive tack rag at an automotive parts store and use that after you very lightly sand the primer with 400 or 600 grit wet or dry paper. The tack rag is for removing any dust left behind. If your not sanding the primer sooner or later you will find paint chipping off, especially on edges and corners. Paint needs a "tooth" to grip to. Thats where the sanding comes in. Remember too that certain paints need red primer and others grey primer to blend right.
Ron

So once you spray the primer the idea is not to get the primer coat smooth? I had been sanding them until they were smooth. Using 600 and 800 grit wet paper. This maybe why I have lost some hoodpins and other minor details. So what is the purpose of cheesecloth. Does the paint coat cover the grain of the primer of do you just lightly buff out the grain of the primer coat?

About the sanding thing... I AM an anal so-and-so, and I use #400 wet sandpaper in the lightest way, just to rough it a tiny bit. Do it too much and #400 or higher will actually shine it. You can use #600, but it takes a bit longer and I tend to mess up if I take too long on it. Also, I use very thin, fine grain primer, one coat only. The only use that primer has is to treat the surface chemically to accept the paint and bond with it.
